Shell Lake Community Hi-litesIn June, the provincial government made significant additions to the Education Act in regards to school closures. Under the new law, a review hinges on two main criteria as to whether a school can be reviewed for closure. A school board can review a school using the enrolment guideline and mileage requirements.
"For example, Shell Lake School, is except from review because it is situated more than 40 km from a school within the school division, even though at 41 pupils it falls below the target of 58 for a K-9 school" according to Tom Sutherland, Superintendent of schools of Sask. Rivers School Division.
It is an opportunity for economical and student population growth in our community. The Shell Lake School will be part of our community for many years to come! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our community for their support.

On September 24th, I attended the Prince Albert Parkland Regional Health Authority Annual General Meeting in Prince Albert. It was a very informative meeting where their challenges and accomplishments were profiled. Their first priority for the year will be staff recruitment and retention. A quote from their 2007-2008 annual report states "the Region offered positions to 31 nurses from the Philippines as part of a provincial recruitment initiative and currently, the region has 56 signed Work Placement Agreements with 34 training institutions." The second priority is to stabilize their financial status as the Prince Albert Parkland had a year-end operating deficit of almost $3.8 million.
If you are interested in regional health statistics, this report is excellent. Quotes from the report states that: "Injury is devastating to the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. Saskatchewan has one of the highest injury rates in Canada." Another statistic from the report quotes that "Circulatory system disease is the leading cause of death in the region and a leading cause of hospitalization.
You can borrow a copy of this report from the Village Office. It is also available on the Internet http://www.health.gov.sk.ca/health-region-list
Village Office is open two days a week - Tuesday and Wednesday. (427-2272)
