Council's effort in balancing the 2008 budget is near completion. The task of meeting operating expenses with incoming revenue has proven to be an enormous challenge with additional attempts for allotting dollars for capital expenditures and growth.
The 2008 taxes will be levied in June with notices mailed in July. Property owners who have tax arrears must bring their taxes current or tax enforcement may proceed.
Where are your tax dollars going towards? Examples are: Police services $5,000; Regional Fire Maintenance fees $3250; Library Levy $1300; Water testing $1300; Effluent Testing fees $2,000; Audit fees $2500; Insurance costs $5500; Street dust control $5200.
The first lagoon payment for $31,764.42 was made in 2008 and the same amount needs to be made for the next nine years. The lotteries that have been held supported the expenses and payments thus far; however, citizens should not be surprised if a sewer levy is introduced in 2009 to meet future payments.

Comments: MINI _ REUNION #1 Have we not all felt that little tremour of trepidation when we meet with a group whom we have not seen for awhile? I felt that way as I walked into the meeting room at the Shady Rest in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island on a Saturday afternoon in late October. Now, for some years Bernice ( Reithaug ) Murcheson and I have met with Gwen ( Johnstone ) Wilson at the " Rest" when she comes out from Shellbrook to visit her daughter on the Island. We always have a wonderful time catching up, but this year was even better. We were joined by Linda ( Haigh ) Walsh who came over from Surrey and Robert Simonar who caught the ferry from Powell River. The three ladies were already looking at their menus when Robert and I arrived, but that was forgotten as we greeted each other, laughed and hugged and felt enveloped in a feeling of good times and good friends. Lucky for us we had an understanding waitress, as eating was put to one side as the noise level went up with a cacophony of voices catching up, remembering and just enjoying each others company Bernice brought us back to earth by ordering her usual quesedilla, but then out came the pictures. Of course many were of our children, and a handsome group of young adults they are, too. Then came the grandchildren photos, such a collection of cuties and all so advanced. But then, aren't all grandkids? We had also brought along pictures of days of long ago and soon one could hear comments like, " .... just who is that standing behind Eddie Hart?", " Oh, yes, I remember........ I wonder what ever became of her?", " What a character! Do you remember the time he......", " That's Zeb standing beside Bruce. It must be in front of the old skating rink.", "Why did they call him Plastic Man?","She was so cute. We were all in love with her!" And, " Look, here's the Hall.I remember when ..... and ...... would stand on that corner and smooch themselves silly....", and so on. But, time and tide wait for no one, especially when you live on an island .You are at their mercy and that of the ferry schedule. Pictures were taken and then, very reluctantly, we gathered ourselves together and parted. It had been a golden afternoon, more treasured for that chest of memories we shared.
