The 3rd Annual Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Festival will be held August 15-17, 2008 at the Ness Creek site, 20 km NE of Big River, SK. This year's line-up includes Hungry Hill, Endless Train, Barley Wik, Les Trad'badour, Knee Deep, Touched Up Roots, Lone Tree Road with JJ Guy, Irvin Amundson and more, including campfire jams and Sunday Morning Gospel. Weekend and Day passes are for sale at various locations across the province, or on-line at our website. Rustic camping included with admission, showers and bathrooms available. The Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Time Music Society on their way to Ness Creek, Blue Grass Festival, are stopping at Shell Lake. They will participate in the July 27th church service at Partners in Worship with some good old time gospel favourites, and will be having a jam session at the Gazebo from 2 - 4:00 p.m. Anyone who would like to participate as a performer, singer or audience are welcome- free of charge!
The clay oven will be fired up.
The tourism committee would like to thank Memorial Lake Park for their help and support during our Canada Day Celebration. Special thanks to Syd and Glenn for looking after the fireworks and a special thank you to John Morrow for supplying us with some great music!
The Annual Shell Lake Homesteader Hey Days is on for July 18, 19 & 20. The parade will start with the Children's parade at 11 a.m followed by the regular parade at 11:30 a.m. Registration and gathering will take place by the rock garden. If you wish you can preregister call Carol at 427-2040.
One new main attraction this year is a Magic show at the Lion's hall beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the young and the old! Admission for the show will be $3.00 per person.
Thanks to the volunteers that continue to strive to make the Village a clean and attractive place to live in and visit. Due to limited dollars in the budget this year, our maintenance person does not have assistance in grass cutting or trimming. Thank you for taking the extra effort in the up keep of your property, and the area around it.
The scrap iron from our closed landfill is being removed, and soon the tires will be gone. In the future, we ask citizens to utilize facilities that are equipped to handle garbage, such as the one located in Canwood. Garden refuse, tree limbs and items that are approved by the Village can be hauled to the present location. Please check with the village office for details.
Thank you to our citizens for keeping their trees and shrubbery trimmed clear of property lines and sidewalk areas.
The village council would like to remind our citizens and visitors of the noise by - law in the village - there are no firecrackers or fireworks allowed within the village property and will be subject to fines.

Three of our members attended the 2008 SSAI convention in Tisdale & brought back some interesting items of information.
Pie & coffee will again be sold by the Seniors the afternoon of the jam session during Homesteader Hey Days.
The seniors golf tourney is scheduled for August 28th. Posters are in the making and will soon be up.
Fast ball season is now over. Both our teams played well in Spiritwood at the league wind-up. The under 14 team won the B final and the under 10 team were runners up in the B event.
Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted this season, without them we would not have been able to have our children participate. Everyone has to help to make this happen.

Our Annual Golfspel was postponed until later this summer. No reschedule date has been booked. Watch for a possible date in September.

Mabel Hotvedt passed away on June 4/08 at the age of 82 years. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Gloria (Bill) Skene, Bernard (Anna), Donna (Bob) Prafke, Asta (Lea) Schmalz, Neil (Debbie), Linda (Eric Pechawis), Bob, Lilie (John) MacInnis, Deanna (Travis) Moseng and their families.
Norma Johnson (nee Finlayson) passed away on June 18 at the age of 81 years. Left to cherish her memory are her children Madeline (Terry), Wanda (Al), Flora (Clarence), and Lyle (Shaunna).
Congratulations to Tyrone Pott for his great accomplishment in track and field discus. He placed first in Shellbrook, second in the districts in Prince Albert and then went on to the Provincials in Regina were he placed sixth. He basically did this all on his own.

A big welcome to all the "new cabin owners" at Big Shell. It was great to see so many out this past weekend. Just a reminder that there are no pets allowed at the beach or running loose-this is "our home"-thank you.
We once again thank Flo & Ken Mierke for planting the spruce trees along the beach.
It's wonderful to have such great weather, so enjoy the summer!
