Village of Shell Lake Mayor Update

Thanks to a couple of volunteers, the village cross-country ski trails are open for residents of the area and visitors to use and enjoy. The downfall was to see the defacing of signs and property on the trails. This vandalism has been reported to the R.C.M.P. and has been left in their hands for investigation.

The downside of feeding deer - an article in the latest issue of Cottage Life magazine states: `tenderhearted Samaritans may be doing the deer more harm than good, potentially helping spread a killer disease. Evidence indicates that Chronic Wasting Disease spreads by contact _ nose to nose _ or through contaminated soil or feed piles, which is why the authorities recommend that property owners not feed the deer.'

In the January Hi-lites, the Tourism Committee sent out an urgent call for volunteers to sit on this committee. The Village does not want to lose this vital organization due to lack of interest or indifference. Please consider and call the village office for further details.

The Library room in the village building hosts many evening meetings. Please book your meeting date ahead of time with the village office, this is both for security reasons and avoiding an overlap of meetings held on the same evening

Mayor, Paula Stalwick

Thank You

A heartfelt thank you to my family for my 90th birthday celebration, December 29/07. In the afternoon I enjoyed a "Come and Go Tea" visiting with relatives and friends at the Seniors Hall. Thank you ladies of "Partners in Worship" for serving a delicious lunch. A big thank you to Judy Mayo for catering to the supper held at the Villa. You both did a great job! Thank you all for many beautiful cards and flowers with good wishes and hugs. Everything was appreciated. God bless you all for attending and making it a perfect day for me to remember. Happy New Year to all! Maxine Johnson

I just turned 88 years old and I have lived in Shell Lake all my life except for two winters. My parents Arthur and Pearl French were pioneers here in June 1912 just 3 1/2 miles west of where the town of Shell Lake is now. I was born in 1920 on my parents farm, youngest of four children and I am the only one to remain in Shell Lake this many years.
As my late husbands where both farmers I have seen many changes in farming, etc. The only families here where R. Schwartz and H. Kadolph's west of Shell Lake - they were pioneers in 1911.
I would like to hear from anyone who has lived in Shell Lake "Rural" school district #2903 in the early days - any longer than I have! It would be very interesting to hear from you. Written by - Dorothy (French, Simonar, Haroldson) Box 95, Shell Lake, SK. S0J 2G0.

Thanks to everyone for your concern, phones calls & cards to me. I really appreciated it. I am improving. Nel Heckel
