Shell Lake Saskatchewan Grower Wins Town Mural and $5,000 For Local CharitiesTORONTO, ONTARIO – June 13, 2002: Shell Lake grower, Larry Vaagen, has won the BASF 2002 RONILAN®EG Rural Mural Contest. His prize package includes a custom outdoor mural for his community and $5,000 for a local charity of his choice. Drawn from over 3,000 ballots collected across western Canada, Vaagen, who currently operates 2,500 acres and raises 200 head of beef cattle with his family just southwest of Shell Lake, won the contest by filling out and mailing in the RONILAN EG Rural Mural Contest entry form. In addition to the Mural and charity cash donation the Vaagen’s will receive an original painting of their family farm. “I was surprised to have won – it is definitely good news,” says Vaagen. “My family and I are excited about the contest, and proud to have won this for Shell Lake.” Currently home to approximately 200 residents year round, Shell Lake has been developing into a resort community over the past few years. The residents of Shell Lake will have the opportunity to get involved in the Rural Mural program by participating in a special paint-by-number section of the mural. “This is perfect timing for Shell Lake,” says Anita Weiers, Shell Lake Tourism Board President. “We were thinking about commissioning a mural to help promote tourism and beautify our community. Larry Vaagen’s stroke of luck will benefit the entire community. We are delighted he has won the mural for Shell Lake.” Painting of the mural will commence this summer by the talented Rita Swanson, whose stunning works include various murals across Saskatchewan, as well as the design for Canada’s very own loonie. "We are excited for Larry Vaagen and the town of Shell Lake," says Michael Schaad, BASF Specialty Market Manager. "Now in its second year, we continually receive positive feedback in regard to the Rural Mural Program. It is a great way for BASF to give back to the grower and rural communities who play a vital role in the success of the agricultural industry."
