| The first (annual) Shell Lake Fish Derby
On March 8, 250 contestants came out to try their luck ice fishing even though it was -28 C, with a wind chill that peaked at -59 C. After 3 P.M. everyone headed back to the Lion's Hall for the presentation of the prizes. Rose Diesen, manager for Spiritwood Scotiabank, made a presentation of a $2500 donation to the Derby Committee. Spiritwood Scotiabank promotes community involvement which enables their Staff Members Association to make financial donations to organizations. As well as making this donation they assisted with the pancake breakfast and selling tickets. First prize of $5000 went to Dale Kristoff from Domremy with his 8.5oz perch. Second prize of $2000 went to Peter Kyliuk from Hafford (8oz walleye). 3rd prize of $1000 went to Cal Robinson from Mildred (4oz perch). Cal Robinson was also the winner of a one man ice fishing hut for first fish caught (4oz perch). These presentations were followed by a draw for numerous subsidiary prizes. A total of twenty fish were caught. Smallest was a 1oz perch caught by Simon Houdek from Saskatoon. Bryce Reed from Shell Lake caught a total of ten fish. The early bird prize, a Magellan GPS, drawn on January 31 was won by Lil Marquis from Shell Lake. This derby was sponsored by the Shell Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the Shell Lake Local School Board Playground Committee. Approximately $10,000 was raised and will be shared by these two organizations. Every one seemed to have had a great time so watch for the "2nd Annual Memorial Lake Fish Derby" in March 2004. See You There! The Shell Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Shell Lake Local School Board Playground Committee would like to express their thanks to: our major sponsors, subsidiary prize donors, everyone who purchased a ticket, and lastly, many thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this fundraiser a great success. |
Bryce Reed could take off his toque and gloves because he was laying on the "hot spot". Bryce caught the record, 10 fish.
