Update on Shell Lake School

The Local Advisory Committee will be having a public meeting. The meeting will be on Tuesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. at the school. During this meeting we will be showing the powerpoint presentation that was presented to the Sask. River Board of Education on March 12.

The committee would like to update the community about the things we are doing to fight school closure.

The Board will be making the final decision regarding the future of our school on April 23.

We would like to urge everyone to send in their letters of support. Every letter counts! Letters need to be in by April 16.

Sask. Rivers School Division 545 11th St. East Prince Albert S6V 1B1. Or email to: wcooke@srsd119.ca; bfcs@sasktel.net; tsutherland@srsd119.ca; or avoyer@ sasktel.net or fax to 763-4460.

Coming Events

Auction Sale

There will be an auction sale at the Don and Kathy Lutz acreage on Saturday, April 28 starting at 10 a.m.

Village of Shell Lake Mayor's Monthly Update

Dog & Cat Owners: Village Bylaw 22-91 states that every person within the village who owns, possesses or harbours a dog shall obtain a license from the clerk. The cost of the license is $5.00 per dog. As for cats, no license is required; however, as with dogs, you need to keep your pets within your property boundaries. Be a great neighbour and keep your pet in your own yard and on a leash if you're on a walk about.

Garbage reminder to nonresidents: If you have friends or relatives in the village, it does not give you the right to bring outside garbage in for pick up.

Due to high water tables and the spring thaw, it would be advisable to have your well water tested. Containers are available at the village office.

The Village Office is open 2 days a week to the public: Tuesdays and Wednesdays -10:00 a.m to 4:00 pm.

Council meeting has been changed to Monday, April 23rd.

Mayor Paula Stalwick

Committee/Club Announcements

Shell Lake & District Chamber of Commerce

The main purpose of the Chamber is to make Shell Lake a better place to live & visit. We have accomplished much to be proud of since forming a formal group in 2003. Unfortunately, since that time attendance at meetings & participation by businesses has come to the point where it has become next to impossible to fulfil our mandate with our few active persons.

Those present at our last meeting felt committed to `The Great Neighbourhood Give-Away' on June 2, & `The Cabin Drop' in late May or early June. This could be the last of our Chamber sponsored events since we are led to assume that our local businesses do not need to be promoted nor do they wish to offer assistance for a growing community.

All businesses & interested individuals are invited to the annual meeting for your feedback, favourable or otherwise, on Tuesday April 10 at 7:30 at Partners in Worship hall.

Shell Lake & District Lions Club

Serving our community for 28 years.

Shell Lake Lions Club is hosting a Walk For Diabetes Walkathon on Saturday, May 5th at 11:00 a.m. from the Lions Hall. Food and prizes afterwards. Pledge sheet available at the school and Shell Lake General Store. Please support the research for Diabetes.

Shell Lake 50 Plus

Well it may be hard to believe but spring has arrived. The Seniors are busy as usual. The walking program at the school on Wednesdays is going strong.

The Seniors curling bonspiel was a huge success which can be attributed to the hard work and generosity of all involved. Supper was awesome and a huge thank you to you all.

The Wellness Clinic will be held on April 9 (which is Easter Monday) but the nurses from Spiritwod will be working.

Birthday party for April will be on the 16th. Pastor David Jensen will show slides on their recent trip to El Salvador. All are invited.

We are having a Kaiser tournament on Friday, April 13th at 7 p.m.

Happy Easter to all of you!

RC Legion #15

The lucky winners of the $100.00 Lottery were Marian and Dell Winter of Saskatoon.

On April 4th at 1 p.m. the Legion will be at the school presenting awards to the students who participated in the Poster and Essay content. Everyone interested is welcome to attend.

Shell Lake Minor Sports

Our Learn to Curl program is now complete. We had 24 students come out over the two days a week for eight weeks. We feel everyone had a good time and left with more knowledge of their skills and the game of curling. Thank you to David Jensen, Della Ashe, and Joy Anne Ardagh for their patience and instruction.

Ball season is just around the corner. We have players interested, but we need coaches. Please contact either Jessie Morris or Greg Ardagh to volunteer. Please ensure your children are signed up by April 16, 2007 so that we can organize our teams and have them registered.

Minor Sports Annual Meeting April 12/07 @ 7:30 at the curling rink.

Comments: Am in Calgary working on a Project. The temperature has really dropped and we have a bit of snow on the ground. I was walking back to my Suite last night I could see my breath in the air, and the snow was crunching under my boots. This brought back memories of the winters in Shell Lake, I recalled the many cold nights where one could find comfort in the confines of the Curlng rink, and as vividly as if it were yesterday, I could hear the door slam behind me, the smell of Freshly brewed coffee, Hot Dogs and Hamburgers. SHOUTS OF SWEEP! SWEEP! and the PEEL of the Rocks. It is comforting to remember a time that was... Best Wishes to ALL.......

Comments: ~~A Happy New year to all from the Nermo Clan on the West Coast. A special hello to cousins Debbie , Donna, Lornie and the rest of the Nelsons. Also, all the best to the Battersby's and Brewer's still farming near the Big Shell. ~~Can somebody give that Arnie Surestead a kick in the arse, and get him to give me an e-mail . We had some wild and wacky times as young pups in 68! ~~How has farming been? I know it was getting pretty dry three and a half years ago, when the lake was very low; and we could be seen nosing around town. Enjoy it while you can!!!!!! Arnie Nermo
